Flower History

The carnation, a symbol of passion and pride in Spanish culture, has been the national flower since time immemorial. Its presence is ubiquitous in popular festivities, from the April Fair in Seville to the corridas. The most cultivated variety in Spain, the Mediterranean carnation, grows on the sunny slopes of the south and is exported worldwide. Its name derives from the Latin caro, flesh, a reference to its original pink-flesh colour before centuries of selective cultivation produced the full spectrum now available.
